Thanksgiving Foods That Help (and Hurt) Your Dog’s Gut
Keep Your Dog’s Belly Safe This Thanksgiving
What they can eat and what they absolutely shouldn’t.
Hi Friend,
Thanksgiving is full of love and gratitude but it’s also full of rich foods that can upset your dog’s gut. I wanted to share a quick guide to keep your pup comfortable and out of the emergency room this holiday. A helpful blog post on dog gut distress is coming next.
Safe Thanksgiving Foods for Dogs
Keep portions small, plain, and unseasoned:
• Turkey (white meat only, no skin or bones)
• Carrots
• Green beans
• Plain pumpkin purée
• Sweet potatoes (plain, cooked)
• Apples (no seeds)
Foods to Avoid High Risk for Pancreatitis
These can cause gut upset and dangerous inflammation:
• Turkey skin, gravy, drippings
• Ham
• Mashed potatoes with butter/cream
• Stuffing
• Pie, whipped cream, desserts
• Anything fried
• Cooked bones
• Foods with onions, garlic, or heavy spices
Pancreatitis Red-Flag Checklist
Head to the emergency vet if you see:
• Vomiting (especially repeated)
• Tense or hunched posture
• Not wanting to eat
• Diarrhea
• Lethargy or hiding
• Belly pain when touched
• Trembling, panting, or restlessness
If your pet is in distress go straight to the ER.
A Quick Tip for a Happy Holiday Belly
Feed a little less earlier in the day and add a spoon of plain pumpkin to soothe the gut.
Love is measured in presence and connection rather than table scraps. For animals and humans.
